I wrote a few weeks ago about how my husband and I are preparing for a space clearer to visit our home. My clutter clearing inspiration has continued, and since then I’ve managed to take two more loads of our stuff to our local donation facilities.

This is our Donation Accumulation Area, as I like to call it:

Magoo decided it was a good place for a nap:

Then of course Malcolm had to check it out too:

My simple guideline for our home, is when this area gets annoying for me to look at (it doesn’t usually take much), it’s time to pack it up and ship it out. When I got everything packed up and ready to go to the donation shop it looked like this (with Magoo of course still helping):

I also ended up donating some more expensive items, including a 35mm camera that is still valued at somewhere around $200. Although you still want to make an itemized list for tax purposes, it’s not a bad idea to take photos of your donations, especially if you have some higher dollar items. Should your donation value ever be questioned, it’s handy to have a photo of the item.

You want to know the real reason I love being a Professional Organizer? Because it feels so good dropping all that stuff off at the donation shop. Even if I’m donating stuff for someone else, I always leave there feeling a little lighter and a little more free.

How are your decluttering projects? I’d love to hear about any progress you’re making in the comments below!

It’s hard, but necessary. Unfortunately I’m just starting. At 62, we have a house in Arkansas and a townhouse in D.C. area where I stay all the time. Both have clutter although we’ve only lived in the townhouse 2 1/2 years. But I’m learning to start with clothes, a big source of clutter for me!

I have found that generally once people get started and are able to overcome that first bit of “stuckness” they often find that the momentum continues to build and it becomes easier and easier. Sounds like you’ve found your great place to start! Congrats!

The most difficult thing is when I have a sentimental attachment to something that is otherwise worthless! How do you deal with that?

Here’s another article I wrote about that:

Maybe that will give you some creative ideas for dealing with your sentimental items. 😉
