So winter is pretty much upon us.  Today we’re seeing our second snowfall here in Iowa City – and some of us (yes, me!) are getting excited thinking about cross country skiing and snowshoeing, but for many gardeners winter can be a bit depressing.  Nothing is really growing outside and the landscape looks a little blah after the great colors we had this spring, summer and fall.
I was inspired by my dear friend Phoebe (she knits cool stuff, check out her website!) last year when I visited her house and she had her window boxes all decked out in evergreen and other colorful trimmings.  So I decided this year to follow her lead and head on over to Iowa City Landscaping and pick up some trimmings of my own.  Here’s what I came up with:
Some pine, elderberry and spruce trimmings, red twig dogwood branches, red huckleberry branches, pine cones and some fake cranberries to top it off.  Total cost was just over $30 – not bad for a season worth of interesting decoration.  I’m really happy with how it turned out and the front of our house looks a lot less bland.  I’m hoping this will last thru the majority of the winter.

These type of trimmings can be used in all kinds of containers, inside and out and are a great way to spruce up your winter landscape.  The trimmings smell soooo good – so if you’re looking to bring some holiday scents into your home, consider using the real thing instead of synthetic fragrances.
